Canada ranks 3rd highest in percentage of international students

According to UNESCO, over 4.6 million higher education students study abroad and Canada has welcomed a large number of them. According to the latest Project Atlas report, the country has ranked third among those that host the largest shares of international students in comparison to their total higher education populations. At 15.2%, it follows only Australia (23.8%) and the U.K. (21.1%)

Aiming for 450,000 international students by 2022, Canada seems to be on the right track to meet its goal, affirms ICEF Monitor. In 2015, Canada had already hit the mark of 353,570 students.

There are many reasons why Canada is a top destination for international students. Reasons such as the tuition fees, which are considered to be very affordable for the high-quality education offered. Surveys have also indicated that students find the country’s higher education system prepares them well for the job market. International students in Canada can also benefit from the possibility to work while studying. This allows them to get part-time jobs, inside and off campus, to earn extra money towards living expenses. Many continue to work in Canada after graduation. Some are even eligible to immigrate after graduation. Additionally, the provinces of Atlantic Canada have a government policy to improve international student retention. The combination of these factors and many more offer insights about Canada’s continued attraction to international students.
